For Immediate Release –
6% of County road network will receive sealant treatments; temporary access restrictions expected for Black Point community east of Sears Point Bridge

Marin County, CA – Twenty-five miles of roadway are scheduled for pavement preservation maintenance this summer, which is approximately 6% of the 421-mile County-maintained road network. The project will begin on July 23 and, weather permitting, is expected to take five months to complete.
The purpose of pavement preservation work is to use cost effective and time efficient roadway surface treatments to help preserve the lifespan of the pavement, postponing the need for more invasive, time consuming and expensive roadway rehabilitation projects. The Marin County Department of Public Works (DPW) is overseeing the work.
The overall project for the 25 total miles of pavement preservation will be staggered by location and includes sections of roadway in the following unincorporated areas of Marin: Dillon Beach, Fairfax, Kentfield, Marin City, Mill Valley, Point Reyes, Santa Venetia, Sleepy Hollow, Strawberry, Tomales, and Valley Ford, as well as segments of Fairfax-Bolinas Road and Muir Woods Road.
The road segments in unincorporated Mill Valley and Sleepy Hollow will be the first to receive the pavement sealant treatments, and that work is expected to take place between July 23 and early August. Traffic control measures will be in place allowing for single-lane access with alternating hold times of approximately 5 minutes. More information on the specific Mill Valley and Sleepy Hollow roads can be found on the project webpage, which will be updated with the names of the road segments for the other areas as the schedule solidifies.
As part of the overall project, in coordination with the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) District, the County will be performing long-awaited improvements to the railroad crossing on Grandview Avenue near Harbor Drive, a primary access point for a significant section of the Black Point community. This work will occur in several phases from August 5 through August 8, with varying traffic impacts.
On August 5 and 6, traffic control measures will be in place with a maximum hold time of 10 minutes between 8:30 AM and 5 PM. On August 7 and 8, the traffic control measures will have hold times of approximately 5 minutes between 5:30 AM and 5 PM.
Additionally, Grandview Avenue will be fully closed near Harbor Drive for night work from 9 PM on August 6 until 5:30 AM on August 7. Due to the tight time constraints for the planned construction activities, only active emergency vehicles will be granted access during that timeframe. There will be a short window of through access for the general public from 4 AM to 4:15 AM. Grandview Avenue is a point of access for a large portion of the Black Point community, and County staff understand the inconvenience of the nighttime closure.
Please contact the Marin County Department of Public Works if with any specific concerns related to the closure.
The estimated $3.5 million undertaking is funded by Senate Bill 1 and the County’s Road and Bridge Fund. More information about the County’s Paving Program, including the five-year pavement management plan, can be found online.
