Fairfax-Bolinas Road CONDITION UPDATES, thank you for your patience: At milepost 5.73, Fairfax-Bolinas Road will be open on weekdays and weekends from 12/16/24 through 1/1/25 (weather permitting), with traffic controlled through a single lane with alternating access. This is to accommodate the holiday traffic. From 1/2/25 through 1/5/25, the road will be closed at milepost 5.73 to allow for construction activities as the project nears completion, weather permitting. After 1/5/25, it is anticipated that the road will be closed from Azalea Hill to Ridgecrest on weekdays only. By mid-January, the project is expected to be completed and the roadway will fully reopen. See project webpage for details.

Bolinas Road Slide Repair at milepost 1.34

This is a completed project. You are in the Archived Projects section of the website. Active projects can be found on the Projects webpage.  Alternatively, you can learn more about repairs to other areas of Bolinas Road.

Description

Overview

The severe storm events of January 2023 caused a slip out which undermined the edge of the roadway pavement at milepost 1.34 on Bolinas Road, approximately 850 ft east of the intersection with Sky Oaks Road. As this posed an immediate public safety hazard, the eastbound lane was closed to all traffic and the slide area was secured. Since then, traffic control measures have been in place to allow for alternating two-way traffic through the westbound lane.

The slide repair project will entail building a 230-foot-long retaining wall, adding an updated guardrail and slightly widening the road and shoulder at that location. It is anticipated that the project will begin by early-August and be completed early November.

Funding

The construction cost estimate is $2.39 million and it is funded by a Federal Highway Administration grant.

Traffic impacts

Construction hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00AM to 6:00PM. However, weekend work may be permitted as necessary to complete the work expeditiously. Advanced notification will be provided to the community prior to potentially scheduled weekend work.

Most of the construction phase work will be performed with the same single lane closure set up that has been in place since the roadway was damaged. Traffic control measures will remain in place for the duration of the project, allowing alternating two-way traffic through the westbound lane.

However, while the project was designed to keep one lane open as much as possible while still maintaining all safety requirements, there is no way to perform this type of repair work without some full road closures. When the need for closing the road is identified, the contractor will provide a minimum of 7 days' notice. This will only be permitted when it is needed for safety reasons and/or the activity is not possible within the currently available space. The timing of any such road closure will still allow residents to get out in the morning and come home at end of the workday. However, during construction work hours, there will be times when in-and-out will not be possible except for emergency services vehicles.
