Fairfax-Bolinas Road CONDITION UPDATES, thank you for your patience: At milepost 5.73, Fairfax-Bolinas Road will be open on weekdays and weekends from 12/16/24 through 1/1/25 (weather permitting), with traffic controlled through a single lane with alternating access. This is to accommodate the holiday traffic. From 1/2/25 through 1/5/25, the road will be closed at milepost 5.73 to allow for construction activities as the project nears completion, weather permitting. After 1/5/25, it is anticipated that the road will be closed from Azalea Hill to Ridgecrest on weekdays only. By mid-January, the project is expected to be completed and the roadway will fully reopen. See project webpage for details.

Bolinas Road Slide Repair at milepost 1.0

Description

Overview

The March 2023 storms triggered multiple landslides and roadway damage along Bolinas Road. The damaged locations had been receiving repairs in order of urgency. However, the damage was significantly compounded by the February 2024 state-declared disaster-level storms.

The road is the sole route for hundreds of homes and provides critical access for wildland firefighting. The road is also the only way to reach water treatment facilities that supply drinking water for one-third of Marin Water’s customers.

The storm damage from February 2024 increased the scope of necessary repairs. The slide repair project at milepost 1.0 will entail building a 100-foot-long retaining wall at that location, as well as reinforcing the existing adjacent 100-foot-long retaining wall with new anchors.

Funding

The construction cost is estimated at $1.9 million. A Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) grant is being sought to cover 88% of the cost.

Traffic impacts

For the duration of the project (Monday through Sunday, 24 hours per day), there will be single lane access with alternating two-way traffic controlled by a traffic signal. Traffic signal hold times will be under 5 minutes. This condition is expected to be in place for approximately two months. Construction work hours are planned for weekdays from 7:30AM to 6PM. Weekend work may be permitted as necessary and would be announced in advance to minimize inconvenience to travelers. Drivers and cyclists are required by law to adhere to all roadway laws, which include following the construction signage and traffic control measures. Some construction activities are expected to require short road closures of approximately four-hour intervals, which will be publicized in advance.
