PRP Road Retaining Wall Aesthetics

Feedback Request on Aesthetics of a Retaining Wall on Point Reyes Petaluma Road

Overview:

The County of Marin is proposing to construct a retaining wall along the north side of Point Reyes–Petaluma Road, just northeast of the Nicasio Valley Road intersection, as part of a larger safety improvement project.

The County of Marin is requesting community feedback regarding the aesthetics of the planned retaining wall. The submission deadline is June 25 by 5PM, please see the section at the bottom of the page for the submission process.

Retaining Wall Design and the Potential Aesthetic Options:

  • Wall measurements: Approximately 360 feet long and up to six feet high.
  • Current Concept: A concrete barrier base with timber lagging, which would be similar to an existing wall located about one mile northeast on the same corridor. Example shown in Figure 1. (The vertical columns could be painted brown.)
  • Alternative Aesthetic Treatment Options: Based on this requested community feedback, the project design team is open to considering a sculpted and stained concrete wall that would simulate the appearance of either of the two following options:
    • A natural-looking rock wall. Example shown in Figure 2.
    • A sculpted shotcrete (sprayed concrete) wall.  Example shown in Figure 3.
