Roadway Safety Review – 2018 Travel Safety Plan

On May 25, 2016, the County of Marin, acting in partnership with Marin towns and cities, was awarded a State grant from the Systemic Safety Analysis Report Program (SSARP). This grant provided funds for a systemic traffic safety analysis that evaluated and identified high-risk road corridors, high-risk intersections, and locations of repeated pedestrian and bicycle collisions within the Marin County region. The scope of the study included both the unincorporated area of Marin County and the incorporated cities and towns within Marin County. The work has culminated in the development of the 2018 Marin County Travel Safety Plan. Operational measures and potential capital improvements were identified in the traffic analysis to address high-risk collision locations. Identification of potential traffic safety improvements have assisted in the preparation of three Highway Safety Improvement Program grant applications that were submitted to Caltrans in August 2018. It is anticipated that the 2018 Marin County Travel Safety Plan will be a key document in the preparation of future Public Works work programs for each local jurisdiction.

On December 13, 2016, the Board of Supervisors accepted the SSARP grant and established appropriations and revenue based on agreements with the local towns and cities for the local match requirement. On March 17, 2017, the Department of Public Works released a Request for Proposals and on July 11, 2017 the Board of Supervisors awarded a contract to Parisi Transportation Consulting. A Technical Advisory Committee was then formed with key members from the Marin Public Works Association, Transportation Authority of Marin and Marin General Hospital. The work has involved collaboration with all the various Public Works departments, along with the various town and city Police departments, the Sheriff and the California Highway Patrol.

On December 18, 2018, the Board of Supervisors accepted the 2018 Marin County Travel Safety Plan that provides a systemic safety analysis for motorists, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians on local non-state arterial and collector roadways countywide.
